gatefold

OAB Definition

a French-door fold, with an additional fold in the middle of the back panel. This creates a folio, each leaf of which is a full-sized foldout.

The term gatefold has many other common uses. Among them are:

  • various brochure folds: see trifold and French-door fold.
  • foldouts that are the same width as the page.
  • a folio whose two leaves are pockets. This variation is often used for album covers and the pockets hold vinyl records or compact discs.
