illegibility

OAB Definition

partial or complete obfuscation or visual interruption of text; often, illegibility is implemented as a conceptual practice that employs techniques such as overprinting, repetition, blacking out, etc. Typically, the artist’s intention is to disrupt the text and/or image and refocus the viewer’s experience from the textual to the visual implications, complicate the reading, and/or expand verbo-visual translation.
