broadside

OAB Definition

large sheet of paper printed on one side.

In form, broadsides and posters are similar, but in content and historical context, much different. Broadsides were mostly text: largely proclamations and news, before newspapers existed. Posters are for advertisement and decoration – a more modern usage. Their function is to make a strong impression from a distance and thus are often dominated by image. Usually one sided, but not exclusively.

Historical broadsides also contained opinions, ballads, and information. The earliest chapbooks were folded up broadsides.

From the BARD website: “The term also refers to a literary genre. In this context, a broadside features a poem or an excerpt from a prose piece and is often accompanied by an image. Often literary broadsides are created to commemorate a poet’s reading, or a special event.”
