sempu-yo

OAB Definition

historical East Asian binding which translates to whirlwind binding. Know in the west (or just the United States) as the flutter book.

Sempu-yo is the Japanese term for the whirlwind binding, which is mentioned in ancient East Asian manuscripts, but not well described. This has led to debate about the form of the whirlwind binding. One view holds that it is the dragon scale binding. The other is that it is an accordion book with a cover that attaches front and back pages (very similar to the flutter book). Sempu-yo or senpuyo is a Japanese term that refers to the accordion variation. The Chinese term xuanfeng zhuang usually refers to the dragon scale binding.
