cover extensions

instances where the cover material, often limp velum or leather, extends beyond the board or textblock and folds down over the head, tail, and/or foredge of a book. Most often seen on devotional books.

Yapp and divinity circuit binding are common 19^th century examples, but cover extensions were seen as early as the 16^th century.
