butterfly binding
OAB Definition
simple binding made by tipping together a stack of folios at the spine.
Developed in China during the Tang period. Its Japanese names, Detchoso or Kotchoso, translate to “pasted paper leaf book” and “butterfly book,” respectively. The butterfly binding is fragile, and its failure over time lead to more innovation in Chinese binding techniques.
