From the BARD website: A fragment is a literary form which may be part of or suggestive of a larger text. These may be literal fragments, as in the incomplete remnants of ancient texts, such as a poem from Sappho; or, they are used to create an intentionally fragmented text that creates gaps, or tries to unsettle the expected.
