edge decoration made by the impression of heated tools, often made over gilt edges. Most all gauffering patterns are made with the repeated use of a pointillé tool, as it is best for making an impression on hard page edges.
The term “gauffering” might also refer to the crimping or fluting of cloth with gauffering irons.
