paper made through large-scale industrial processes.  Results are often hard surfaced, smooth, and much of it is made for industrial printing, but products vary greatly.

Sometimes the term is used interchangeably with commercial paper to indicate paper not intended for fine art processes, although high-quality art paper can also be made through machine processes.
