monotype (letterpress matrix)

OAB Definition

in typecasting for relief printing, type produced on a monotype caster (patented in 1890). The name “monotype” distinguished the machines and the type they produce from linotype machines (invented 1884) that cast lines of type as slugs, which could only be corrected or edited by recasting a whole line. Monotype has a reputation for being softer than “foundry” type, but monotype machines can use any quality of type alloy and are capable of producing high quality, durable type if operated well.
