writing support made of untanned animal skin which has been stretched, thinned, and dried. Parchment can be made out of the skin of any animal.
The term is often used interchangeably with vellum, which is made of calf skin. Determining the difference between materials is not always possible without testing, so parchment is the more commonly used term.
