perfect binding

OAB Definition

stack of single leaves joined by the application of strong, flexible adhesive at the spine edge. Typically, the spine-edge has been prepared for adhesive by roughening or notching across the spine-edge.

The word “perfect” in the term refers to how perfectly flush the paper cover and text block can be trimmed on all three non-spine edges after binding.

In commercial binderies, the terms burst, notch, and perfect, are often used interchangeably.

ABT Definition

Signatures, single pages, or leaves bound into a cover with an adhesive binding.
