narrow strips of closely woven cloth (or other flat, flexible material) to which the sections of a book are sewn in supported bindings. Sewing supports are no longer used in most trade bindings.
Supported sewing forms sometimes use cords. In some early supported bindings, thongs or vellum tapes were used.
