tarsh

OAB Definition

printing matrix used in Northern Africa between the 10^th and 14^th centuries. Largely used to make amulets, they were typically carved woodblocks, but there is evidence that some were cast in tin. Over a hundred prints are known to exist, but no examples of tarsh have been found.
