poetry in which the visual arrangement or text, with the possible addition of images and symbols, is important to convey the intended effect of the work.
In Pattern Poetry: Guide to an Unknown Literature, Dick Higgins describes visual poetry as “the intermedium between literary and visual art,” and uses it “as a comprehensive term covering the whole of pattern and more recent visual poetry.”
