whirlwind binding
OAB Definition
whirlwind bindings are mentioned in ancient East Asian manuscripts, but are not well described. This has led to debate about the form of the whirlwind binding. One view holds that it is the dragon scale binding. The other is that it is an accordion book with a cover that attaches front and back pages (see flutter book). The Japanese term sempu-yo most often refers to the accordion variation, and the Chinese term xuanfeng zhuang usually refers to the dragon scale binding.
